When a tree cannot simply be felled – because it stands beside a house, over a road, between gardens or near power lines – it is taken down piece by piece. Sectional dismantling is the controlled, rope-and-rigging removal of a tree in manageable sections, and it is the method Eastern Tree & Garden Specialists uses for the majority of tree removals in Newmarket, Suffolk and Cambridgeshire.
When sectional dismantling is needed
- Trees close to houses, extensions, conservatories, garages and sheds.
- Trees overhanging roads, pavements, neighbouring gardens or paddocks.
- Tight urban plots and terraced gardens with no room to fell a whole stem.
- Trees near power lines, telephone cables, greenhouses or ponds.
- Dead, decayed or storm-damaged trees where a straight fell would be unpredictable.
- Large mature trees where a single fell would damage lawns, beds or hard landscaping.
How a sectional dismantle works
A qualified climber ascends the tree on ropes (or works from a MEWP where the tree is unsafe to climb) and removes the crown in sections, starting with the outer branches. Heavier limbs and trunk sections are rigged with lowering ropes, pulleys and friction devices so they can be lowered in a controlled way to a set landing zone, rather than dropped. A ground team manages the ropes, processes each piece as it comes down and keeps the site clear. The stem is then taken down in rounds until only the stump remains, which can be ground out on the same visit.
Safety and planning
Every dismantle starts with a risk assessment: the tree’s condition, the targets beneath it, access, weather and the size of each cut. Drop zones are marked, banksmen control pedestrians and traffic where needed, and we work in constant communication between climber and ground crew. All our arborists are NPTC-certified for aerial rescue, chainsaw use from a rope and harness, and rigging, and the work is fully insured.
Frequently asked questions
Is sectional dismantling more expensive than felling?
It takes longer and needs more equipment and people, so yes, it usually costs more than a straight fell of the same tree. It is far cheaper than repairing a roof or fence.
Will you damage my lawn or garden?
Controlled lowering means sections are placed, not dropped. We protect lawns with boards where needed and leave the site tidy.
Can a tree be dismantled next to power lines?
Only with the electricity network operator’s involvement. We will tell you if this applies and help arrange it.
Do I need permission to remove a tree?
If the tree has a TPO or is in a conservation area, yes. We check for you and handle the application.
