Why prune rather than fell?
Many of the trees we are asked to remove could have been kept with the right pruning at the right time. Reducing weight on long limbs, clearing crossing branches and removing deadwood greatly lowers the chance of storm damage and often solves the light, overhang or neighbour issues that prompted the call. Pruning is usually cheaper than removal, keeps the tree’s shade and screening, and avoids the stump. We will always tell you plainly when pruning is the better option – and when it isn’t.
Pruning at the right time
Most deciduous trees are best pruned in winter dormancy or after the leaves have hardened in mid-summer. Cherries, plums and other stone fruit are pruned in summer to avoid silver leaf disease; walnuts, birches and maples “bleed” in spring and are pruned in late summer. Trees with nesting birds are left until the young have flown. If your tree has a Tree Preservation Order or sits in a conservation area, permission is needed even for pruning – we handle the TPO application for you.

We climb using ropes or use a MEWP where appropriate, make clean cuts at the correct points so wounds close quickly, rig down any heavy sections over roofs, fences or beds, and leave the site tidy with all arisings chipped and removed.
